Shannon Dean Elected Mayor of Chestermere, Pledges Trust and Stability

Shannon Dean has been elected as the new mayor of Chestermere in a byelection held six months after the Alberta government dismissed the city’s former mayor and three councillors. Dean, a former teacher, principal, and community volunteer, won decisively with 56% of the vote.

The election comes after a period of significant turmoil for the 25,000-person city, which had been operating without a mayor and council, managed instead by a province-appointed administrator. The previous officials were removed due to findings of mismanagement.

Dean, who served as a city councillor under the former mayor, will lead a largely new council, with only one returning member. He expressed gratitude and humility for the support and emphasized his commitment to earning the trust of all residents. The new council aims to focus on stability and effective governance, looking to develop a strong strategic plan in preparation for the 2025 municipal elections, in which Dean intends to run again.

Joining Dean on the council are five first-term councillors, indicating a fresh start for the city’s leadership. Voter turnout was notable, with over 6,300 ballots cast, surpassing the turnout from the 2021 election.
