A second attempt by the city’s former mayor and councilors to obtain a court injunction against their firing by the Alberta government was denied. Justice Johanna Price of the Court of King’s Bench found that Jeff Colvin, the ex-mayor, and three former councilors, Stephen Hanley, Mel Foat, and Blaine Funk, failed to demonstrate they would suffer irreparable harm without the injunction. Their dismissal on December 4 came after an inspection found city management to be irregular and improper. They sought the injunction to temporarily regain their positions while challenging their dismissal through a judicial review, which Price acknowledged as having a “serious issue to be tried” but still denied their immediate reinstatement. The city is currently overseen by provincial appointees, with a byelection for new council members scheduled before June. This marks the group’s second unsuccessful injunction bid, following a previous denial linked to potential harm to the public interest.
