The Alberta government intends to dismiss the Chestermere city council and administrators for failing to adhere to provincial directives. Chestermere initiated legal action challenging the dismissals, however the province-appointed supervisor overturned city council resolutions funding the litigation. The mayor asserts this obstructs Chestermere’s legal defense. The supervisor deemed the resolutions a “blank check” lacking budget oversight. Chestermere had previously retained counsel for $100,000. Additionally, Chestermere seeks a court injunction to pause the dismissals, excluding three councillors whose complaints prompted the provincial investigation. The mayor alleges overreach and conspiracy by the province. Legal counsel will appear in court later this month regarding Chestermere’s injunction application.
