The City of Chestermere has stated that it has fulfilled many of the requirements given to it by the Alberta government earlier this year. However, the city is proceeding with a legal challenge against the investigation which led to these directives. In a recent meeting, the city council endorsed an application for a judicial review against the province-ordered governance investigation and the resulting 12 directives. The city has also authorized the hiring of a lawyer to address all legal matters arising from this situation.
Chestermere Mayor, Jeff Colvin, and city administrators have criticized the municipal inspection carried out in May 2022, calling it biased and claiming it was conducted in an “irregular, improper, and improvident” manner. They have alleged that the investigation might be a result of a conspiracy involving the Municipal Affairs Minister, Ric McIver.
Though the city believes they have completed the directives, the province is still reviewing the city’s submissions. If Chestermere fails to comply, McIver has the authority to remove city officials. As part of their challenge against the province, the city has set aside funds from its 2023 budget to cover legal expenses.
Mayor Colvin emphasized the city council’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Chestermere and its residents, expressing their dedication to the principles of local governance.
