Chestermere Candidates Debate Key Issues at Pre-Byelection Forum

Posted underElectionCopied!

At a forum held at the Chestermere Recreation Centre, over two dozen candidates, including four mayoral and twenty-three council candidates, faced more than 300 residents ahead of the June 24 byelection. The event follows the firings of former mayor Jeff Colvin and three councillors last December due to political dysfunction. Key issues discussed included the need for more schools, infrastructure improvements, and increased recreational opportunities.

Candidates emphasized integrity and trust, with mayoral candidate Marshall Chalmers highlighting experience and Shannon Dean advocating for responsible governance. Former councillor Christopher Steeves stressed his extensive municipal experience. Colvin defended his track record, focusing on tax reductions and cost savings, while some candidates criticized his past use of city funds.

Education was a major topic, with candidates addressing classroom overcrowding and school site availability. Disagreements arose over the readiness of school sites for construction.

The forum concluded with candidates largely agreeing on key issues like school development and healthcare expansion. Advance voting opens this weekend, with the election scheduled for June 24.
