An assault charge against Kim Wallace, a former chief administrative officer for the City of Chestermere, has been withdrawn. The charge, stemming from an incident in January 2023 where Wallace was accused of poking a subordinate, was dropped after Wallace completed a diversion program. The trial, which began last July, ended abruptly when the Crown prosecutors withdrew the charge during a scheduled court appearance. Wallace had been part of a group of city officials, including the mayor and three councillors, fired by the province in December last year for failing to adhere to directives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. An investigation had found improprieties in their governance. A byelection to replace the dismissed officials is expected before June, with those ousted, including former mayor Jeff Colvin, planning to run again if their legal challenges to their dismissals fail.
